Workforce 'increasingly mobile and independent'

3 December 2012

UK employers need to ensure they can keep track of their staff as mobile working makes it increasingly easy for people to increase their productivity, a new report has suggested.

Data from the Kelly Global Workforce Index found that 28 per cent of employees in the UK work more than six hours outside their scheduled operating times each week.

This suggests that mobile working has increased productivity, but 38 per cent of respondents indicated that they are also suffering from more stress and burnout as a result of the technological advance.

Gary Jones, managing director at Kelly Services, said: "It is becoming increasingly important that employers keep in close contact with their workforce, making sure they are offering the support and encouragement their workers need."

He added that the shift from a traditional 9-5 model makes this especially challenging for modern executives.

Dr Mark Winwood, clinical director for psychological health at AXA PPP Healthcare, recently stressed the importance of training line managers to identify employee stress.
