Voluntary sector 'using interim expertise'

Voluntary organisations are expected to use interim managers to bring in skills and knowledge from the public sector.

This is according to Elaine Smethurst, head of workforce development at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), who told the Guardian that the third sector could provide job opportunities for senior employees leaving public sector bodies.

Charities and voluntary organisations are in line to play a more central role in public service delivery as part of the government's Big Society vision.

Ms Smethurst said some voluntary organisations are already turning to interim managers with public sector expertise.

"The sector will need income generation skills," she told the newspaper.

"If people have been engaged in procurement, the broad skills of negotiating and partnership working will be useful."

In a recent speech at Cass Business School, NCVO chief executive Sir Stuart Etherington called for voluntary organisations and community groups to work in partnership with councils to deliver the government's localism agenda.
