UK management standards 'are currently lacking'

28 February 2012

Research carried out by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Penna has revealed that UK management standards are in need of improvement, with 43 per cent of businesses describing their line managers as "ineffective".

The CMI-Penna report, drawing on findings from roughly 4,500 managers, also found that management and leadership development activities can help boost performances across the board.

It found that processes aimed at improving the development of people in top positions can lead to a 32 per cent boost in people performance and a 23 per cent growth in the performance of the organisation as a whole.

Christopher Kinsella, acting chief executive for CMI, said the report contained a combination of positive and negative news.

He suggested the poor managerial performance is offset by the prediction that "by investing in management and leadership development wisely, employers can make a real, measurable difference".

Recently published research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development revealed that 49 per cent of middle managers feel under excessive pressure in work, either every day or once or twice a week.
