UK companies 'need more robust supply chains'

6 December 2010

The widespread disruption caused by recent weather conditions proved that supply chains in the UK are still not resilient enough, an expert has claimed.

David Noble, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS), suggested that both public sector and private sector organisations require better contingency plans to deal with events such as extreme weather.

"More needs to be done to ensure that supply chains are robust and flexible enough to cope with changes in demand," he commented.

Mr Noble added that local authorities and commercial enterprises should "take the initiative and work more collaboratively" to ensure supply chains are able to cope with transport disruptions.

Many of the country's major roads were rendered extremely dangerous or impassable by snow and ice as temperatures plunged across Britain last week.

Gatwick Airport reopened on Friday (December 3rd) after being closed for two days due to heavy snowfall, with more than 1,000 flights at the London hub cancelled as a result.
