Technology supply chain managers 'under more pressure'

25 January 2011

A growing number of companies in the hi-tech and electronics industry are looking to supply chain managers to deliver profitability, according to new research.

The latest eyefortransport Hi-Tech Supply Chain Executive Survey found that 96 per cent of the sector's supply chain executives believe they are under "more pressure than ever" to find savings.

Respondents to the survey said supply chain professionals are being asked to deliver innovative cost-cutting measures, as well as developing new strategies to boost sales and improve customer service levels.

"To respond to these increased challenges, supply chain executives will look to their supply chain service and solution providers for new solutions," the report stated.

Executives named cost reduction, reducing the complexity of supply chains and improving visibility as their top priorities for 2011.

A recent report from Fortune magazine pointed to a shortage of qualified supply chain managers among businesses with global operations.

The economic situation has placed increased demands on the profession, according to the publication, with supply chain expert Tom Kozenski claiming it requires a rare mixture of "hard" and "soft" skills.
