Supply chains 'are undergoing a structural shift'

30 August 2011

The structure of global supply chains is being altered by rising commodity prices and energy costs, according to Channel 4's Faisal Islam.

He told Supply Management that worldwide economic shocks are increasingly transmitted by fluctuations in the dynamics of the procurement and supply chain industry.

Mr Islam, who is the economics editor at Channel 4 News and will chair the forthcoming annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS), suggested taking more risks could benefit corporate buyers in the UK.

"High oil and energy prices are causing a structural shift in supply chains," the journalist said.

"Too many people in British corporate culture don't want to take the sorts of risks you see taken in the US."

Mr Islam is set to explore the role of procurement in driving economic growth at the 2011 CIPS Conference, which will take place in London on Thursday October 6th.

Other confirmed speakers include change management expert Ellis Watson and John Collington, head of procurement at the government's Efficiency and Reform Group.
