Staff engagement 'a vital part of change management'

Business leaders involved in a change management process have been reminded of the importance of engaging workers.

Jayne Carrington, managing director of consultancy firm Right Management, has suggested that human resource (HR) issues will play a vital role in ensuring the current programme of NHS reforms are a success.

Earlier this month, health secretary Andrew Lansley outlined plans to provide healthcare workers with leadership training, which will allow them to take a more active role in driving the success of the reform process.

According to Ms Carrington, this is because leadership skills will be vital to ensure that all workers are informed of the nature of the changes taking place, as well as making sure that any concerns over the reforms are allayed.

"It's about leadership in terms of overarching strategy and, more than ever, good line management practices ... Engaging HR should be a priority during the change management process," she observed.
