Retail employment growth hits 11-year high

28 August 2013

The number of people employed in UK retail increased at the fastest rate in 11 years over the last 12 months.

This is according to new figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which found such a high rate of growth has not been recorded since May 2002.

Businesses in the sector told the organisation they expect to increase their headcounts further next month, with the level of optimism in this area at its highest for three months.

Impressive sales performance is one the major drivers behind this employment growth, with volumes currently above average for the first time since January 2011.

Barry Williams, chair of the CBI Distributive Trades Survey Panel - which carried out the survey - commented: "The feel-good factor from the heatwave, summer sales, royal baby fever and sporting victories has helped boost the high street, with clothing retailers and grocers benefiting in particular."

However, he did warn the sector should not rest on its laurels and claimed a full recovery is dependant on family finances improving.
