Public sector outsourcing 'must be done with greater care'

30 August 2011

More care must be taken over outsourcing initiatives in the public sector if the full benefits are to be unlocked, according to an expert.

Colin Cram, the former director of the North West Centre of Excellence, told Guardian Professional that there have been "too many failures" in public sector outsourcing due to bad management.

He noted that this may be due to unrealistic expectations, a lack of due diligence by the involved parties or unsatisfactory contract management arrangements, as well as inadequate appraisal of whether outsourcing was the correct option.

As such, Mr Cram stated public sector bodies should give more thought to their outsourcing policies, as well as considering models such as joint outsourcing.

"Such approaches could give the private sector more confidence to invest, innovate and deliver better outcomes," he added.

Earlier this month, Michael Dominy of Gartner told Supply Management that it is vital for organisations to assess their strengths before committing to an outsourcing deal.
