Positive environment 'essential for staff engagement'

23 March 2012

Businesses that wish to get the most out of their employees need to manage their workforce in a way that creates a positive environment, according to an expert.

Richard Close, business transformation specialist and chief executive of Briggs Equipment, said providing staff with an inspiring and enjoyable workplace can help to foster loyalty more effectively than financial incentives.

As such, companies should put in place open channels of communication to allow workers to offer opinions, with regular feedback sessions and workshops highlighted as good ideas.

Managers should also seek to keep workers of all levels informed about the company's overall status, while involving them in decision-making processes.

"Most employees respond more positively to being able to work freely in an open environment where their input is valued and they are given the opportunity to contribute their own ideas and flourish."

According to a recent Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development report, improved understanding of business principles among HR staff can be crucial to improving communication between staff and managers.
