New EU procurement reforms to be introduced quickly

1 August 2013

The Cabinet Office has "ambitious plans" to quickly introduce EU procurement reforms.

Last month, talks were held between the coalition and European authorities with a package of three new directives covering the public sector, utilities and procedural rules agreed.

The changes will apply to central government agencies, non-departmental public bodies and the wider public sector including local councils and the NHS.

An official policy note stated: "Cabinet Office is preparing ambitious plans for early transposition, so that the UK can take advantage of the additional flexibilities in the new rules as soon as possible."

It claimed the revised package will help the UK achieve its objectives of making public procurement faster, less expensive and more effective.

The Cabinet Office also said the changes will benefit suppliers by reducing red tape and introducing new safeguards against corruption.

Last month, a study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research commissioned by Gatewit found the cost of UK public sector procurement is nearly twice the European average.
