Manufacturing could face skills shortage

14 August 2013

The UK manufacturing sector could be faced with a skills shortage in the near future, according to new research.

A study carried out by company Mondelez International has revealed just eight per cent of school leavers are considering a career in the industry, HR Magazine reports.

This lack of interest may stem from the fact 45 per cent of young people said they know very little about manufacturing, while close to three-quarters believe a desk-based career would be better paid.

Neil Chapman, Mondelez UK chocolate manufacturing director, commented: "The industry and government need to work together to get young people enthusiastic about manufacturing again."

He also called on the education system to do more to equip school leavers with the skills required to work in the industry.

This worrying news follows a relatively positive period for manufacturing. Research by the Confederation of British Industry in July found optimism in the sector increased for the second quarter in succession in the three months from March to June.
