Managers 'should praise staff and give them chances to excel'

13 August 2012

Managers keen to get the most out of their staff have been advised that a few words of encouragement and appreciation for their efforts can go a long way.

Kevin Friery, clinical director at Right Management Workplace Wellness, said one of the best ways to motivate employees is to give them a role that stretches them some of the time, allows them to excel in certain areas and to have the opportunity to contribute and see the difference their efforts are making.

He commented: "Giving people flexibility to arrange their work in a way in which they feel they have some control is an important motivating factor."

Research carried out by Travelodge recently revealed that many people across the UK are working late into the evening, with one-third of Brits claiming to put in up to 16 extra hours of overtime each week.

In total, the value of this unpaid work amounts to £157 billion.
