Managers 'should be cautious over presenteeism'

It is vital that managers keep a close eye on their staff to ensure they are not engaging in presenteeism, the practice of turning up for work despite being ill because of uncertainty in the stability of their employment position, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has claimed.

This follows the publication of CIPD data showing that the average level of employee absence has fallen from 7.7 days to 6.8 per employee over the last 12 months.

While these figures ostensibly indicate a positive development for executives, CIPD research advisor Dr Jill Miller pointed out that economic conditions in the UK may be making employees anxious about taking days off.

"This year sees a continued increase in presenteeism which can have a damaging effect on organisations’ productivity," she explained.

Illnesses can be passed on to colleagues and unwell employees are likely to recover more slowly if coming into work, suggested Dr Miller.

A report from London-based property developer DeVono recently noted that office temperature and other factors can impact performance.
