Local government outsourcing 'set to increase'

7 June 2011

Outsourcing in the local government sector is set to increase as authorities seek to meet ambitious efficiency savings targets.

A survey conducted by Interserve among chief executives and directors has revealed that outsourcing levels among local councils are expected to rise to 34 per cent by 2014.

This would represent a 70 per cent increase on 2011 levels, while 84 per cent of councils stated their belief that outsourcing has already helped them to achieve savings.

Adrian Ringrose, Interserve's chief executive, said local authorities would most likely have greater success in procuring best-value solutions by conducting a full review of their service delivery.

"Ultimately, the future is going to be defined by partnerships between the public, private and third sectors working together to help redefine delivery and instigate a positive change," he added.

Earlier this week, Zurich Municipal public services director Andrew Jepp told the Local Government Chronicle that outsourcing processes require careful management to guarantee success.
