Local government 'a growth area for interim managers'

The number of interim managers being recruited by local government organisations is on the increase, according to a report.

Data from the Interim Management Association's (IMA's) new Ipsos MORI industry benchmark survey for Q1 2011 reveals that 44 per cent of interim management appointments in 2010 came from local government employers.

This represented an increase from the 26 per cent figure recorded at the same point last year and comes despite an overall drop in public sector interim recruitment.

Jason Atkinson, chair of the IMA, said this trend is being driven by the need for local authorities to deliver major reforms and efficiency savings in highly pressurised circumstances.

"Interims are being used to lead change management and transformation projects, implement shared services programmes and they are working at the highest levels in local councils to help them achieve their efficiency goals," he explained.

Earlier this year, Mr Atkinson stated that interim managers can be of particular value in the healthcare sector, due to the number of reforms taking place in this field.
