Interim opportunities 'fuelled' by recession

23 July 2009

The global economic downturn is creating opportunities for "commercially savvy" turnaround directors.

That is according to the interim management specialist the Institute of Turnaround, which highlighted the growing demand for transitional executives in both the public and private sector, Accountancy Age reported.

Identifying the skills and experience required to be successful in interim management positions, the organisation said that executives must have negotiating and political skills, personal courage and an understanding of stakeholders' values.

Christine Elliott, chief executive of the Institute of Turnaround, encouraged prospective interim executives to search a broad range of sectors for suitable positions.

She told the magazine: "There is work in banks, there are some fantastic private equity specialists that concentrate on turnarounds, and in industry, you can become a corporate trouble-shooter."

This perspective on the UK's executive recruitment market is shared by the management specialist Don Jacobson and Shelley Safian, who disclosed last week that corporations with short-term problems are hiring more interims.
