Interim managers 'must secure commitment'

Successful interim managers must secure commitment from senior and middle management, according to a senior public sector executive.

Jon Creese, head of IT for Hampshire County Council, suggested that altering old-fashioned perspectives in leadership and management is one of the most difficult obstacles facing executives tasked with achieving transformational projects.

Speaking to Computer World, Mr Creese identified that the severity of the economic downturn has increased the need for managers to take direct responsibility for business efficiency.

However, the IT executive claimed that many individuals occupying senior-level positions in companies are "change-resistant", creating opportunities for interims experienced in transitional roles.

He told the website: "Their experience, skills, remuneration and status are generally based on an old model. They can't grasp the new world so they're clinging to the old one."

The increasing demand for effective change managers was also highlighted by the Right Management last week.

The consultancy specialist revealed that less than half of all UK employees believe change is handled well by their organisation.
