Interim management 'could be platform for more women on boards'

Working as an interim executive could provide female professionals with a pathway to permanent board-level positions, according to the Interim Management Association (IMA).

Jason Atkinson, chairman of the industry organisation, said an increasing number of women are taking up interim roles. Female executives accounted for almost one-third of all interim assignments in the UK last year.

He claimed interim management can "open doors" for women who might otherwise find it difficult to reach the heights of the boardroom by working their way up the corporate ladder.

Mr Atkinson explained that interim assignments allow experienced executives with specialist skills to "parachute straight into an organisation at a very senior level", as well as offering a great degree of flexibility. This could benefit women who have taken time out from their careers to start a family or for other personal reasons.

He added: "I firmly believe it is the role of the enterprise sector to encourage women on to the board and interim management provides the perfect platform for this."

According to recent figures published by the IMA, the total number of interim assignments increased by 18 per cent in the final quarter of 2012.
