Interim assignments 'on the rise'
Demand for interim managers is increasing among UK organisations, with the total number of new assignments up by 18 per cent in the last quarter of 2012.
This is according to the latest quarterly survey from the Interim Management Association (IMA), which found that programme or project management work is currently the most common occupation for interims.
Assignments falling into this category accounted for 40 per cent of all interim roles, compared with 35 per cent in the third quarter of the year.
Meanwhile, the private sector was shown to be generating an increasing number of opportunities for interim managers. In the fourth quarter of 2012, 72 per cent of all interims were working in the private sector - the largest proportion since the IMA's survey began.
Jason Atkinson, chairman of the association, described the results as "very encouraging" and added that 2013 "may well be the year that restores our industry to double-digit growth figures".
He commented: "Increasingly, interim managers are viewed as a cost-effective alternative to hiring management consultants or recruiting additional senior members of staff."
