Improved procurement delivers £500 billion public sector savings

9 August 2012

The government has been able to achieve savings of almost half a billion pounds through improved procurement practices in 2011/12.

New figures from the Cabinet Office show that this total has been achieved over the last year through better use of the public sector's bulk buying power, as well as through spend on goods and services used by different government departments.

This total comes in addition to the £360 billion procurement savings achieved in 2010/11 and underlines the success of public sector efforts to free up funds through improved efficiency.

Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude said: "Because our controls on spending are working well and saving unprecedented amounts of money, I'm determined they will be a permanent feature of good governance."

Last week, a report from insurer Zurich Municipal urged public sector organisations to do more to safeguard themselves against any potential disruption caused by supply chain failures, following a survey revealing that many bodies are not considering this possibility at all.
