Forcing interim managers onto payroll 'could damage productivity'

Forcing interim managers on to company payrolls could damage the productivity of organisations.

This is according to Jason Atkinson, chairman of the Interim Management Association (IMA). Mr Atkinson claimed that many firms rely on the skills of contractors and forcing them on to the payroll could "seriously undermine" the competitiveness of the UK's flexible labour market.

Speaking to business news website Bdaily earlier this month, he said the interim sector must continue to monitor the government’s tightening of the rules concerning off-payroll appointments in the public sector.

Mr Atkinson said the IMA is "all for naming and shaming those who do deliberately avoid tax", but this is not what interim management stands for.

A recent study by the IMA found that 2013 may see the interim sector return to double-digit growth figures for the first time since major cuts took place in the public sector. 

It also found that 72 per cent of interim managers are now operating in the private sector.
