Flexible working 'crucial to UK recovery'

6 December 2012

The use of flexible working policies will be crucial to the UK's economic recovery over the coming years, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has claimed.

Responding to chancellor George Osborne's Autumn Statement, the group suggested that this is the best way to ensure employment growth can be supported by British businesses.

Chief executive Peter Cheese warned that tough, volatile conditions are likely to be the new normal for UK firms, declaring that flexible working can offer businesses the opportunities they need to success in this environment.

"The key to boosting national productivity and competitiveness lies in building the ...  skills needed to ensure firms innovate, create and respond with agility," Mr Cheese added.

CIPD chief economist Mark Beatson emphasised that growth is likely to be subdued over the course of 2013.

Diversity adviser at the CIPD Dianah Worman recently indicated that flexibility can help deal with an ageing workforce.
