Expert reveals change management formula
A business expert has provided executives with several key concepts for a successful change management initiative.
Melissa Dutmers posted an extract from her book Lead Change by Design: A Toolkit to Make Ideas Happen on the SmartData Collective blog.
Her first tip was to make sure that "influential people" support the change, thereby helping to promote a new culture and roll out revised working practices.
According to Ms Dutmers, this means recruiting both senior figures and ordinary workers with "personal connectedness" - those that other people in the organisation look up to - to the cause.
Another crucial aspect of a change management strategy is communication, which should make use of "multiple media" for the greatest effect.
Ms Dutmers concluded that employees must have the ability to make a change successfully, which places the onus on managers to equip them with both the adequate knowledge and the necessary skills.
In a recent blog post for the Wisconsin Technology Network, Gartner research director Mark McDonald said change management initiatives should focus on altering the behaviour of individuals.
