Executives 'must keep workers engaged'

28 December 2012

It is crucial that UK executives keep their employees engaged by offering them a good life-work balance, despite the fact that only 13 per cent are planning to look for a new job in 2013, a report has claimed.

The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) admitted that the current economic climate makes people less likely to look for new positions, but warned that executives should not get complacent.

Chief executive Charles Elvin suggested that keeping staff motivated remains a major challenge for many UK firms.

"It is important that employees should be encouraged to work flexibly to best suit their needs, and we see that improving work-life balance is a priority for many managers next year," he added.

The fact that so many people felt the need to continue working over Christmas may indicate they are under too much pressure in their job, concluded Mr Elvin.

Research from Medicash recently suggested stress levels could increase over the festive period.
