Employers 'failing to embrace flexible working'

25 February 2013

British businesses could be impeding the productivity of their employees by failing to encourage flexible working, according to a new survey by O2.

The communications firm's research, which involved 400 companies and 2,000 employees, found that only 18 per cent of staff say their company encourages them to work flexibly.

This is despite 77 per cent of employers claiming that flexible working is actively promoted within their organisation.

Ben Dowd, O2 business director, claimed it is "shocking" that so few employees feel they are encouraged by employers to pursue flexible working opportunities.

"Businesses must sit up and take notice of this critical evolution in employee behaviour and create a business culture equipped to support it. Talking about it simply isn't enough," he commented.

According to the results of a flexible working pilot launched by O2 last year, staff saved 100,000 miles of commuting, 30 tonnes of CO2 and £20,000 in fuel in one month, while also doubling their productivity.
