Effective procurement leads to significant savings for Surrey Council
Surrey County Council has saved £27 million over the past year by taking a more effective approach to procurement.
Denise Le Gal, the local authority's cabinet member for business services, said the savings have been achieved by negotiating better deals with suppliers.
"We’re determined to get the best possible deal for Surrey’s taxpayers … We’ve now saved £83 million in the past three years through using our negotiating skills," she commented.
Ms Le Gal said the council's savings mean it reduced costs by around £13,000 per hour during the last financial year and has comfortably exceeded its target of £25 million.
The majority of reductions were made in construction and infrastructure (£7.5 million) and adult social care (£9.6 million), Supply Management reports. Spending was also down on education and families and corporate service costs.
Ms Le Gal added the council will strive to discover "new and innovative ways" of operating that will still allow it to deliver high quality public services to the residents of Surrey.
