Diversity 'crucial to businesses'

It is important business executives promote diversity within their company to ensure an organisation is creative and high-performing, according to an expert.

Anni Townend, leadership consultant, coach and author of Assertiveness and Diversity, said leaders and managers are in a strong position to create a corporate culture that welcomes diversity.

She added that boardroom and workplace diversity should be seen as a crucial part of business growth, not merely a box to tick or quota to reach.

"Leaders can, through their own values, engage people in working for a future in which all employees feel safe enough to express their differences," argued Ms Townend.

She added that creating a friendly environment in the workplace is vital to having "an engaged and inclusive workforce".

Employment expert John Rushton recently suggested that the best way to encourage workplace diversity is setting in place strong recruitment policies that ensure new staff are engaging and tolerant.
