Cyber security 'can affect bottom line'

24 December 2012

UK businesses can find themselves out of pocket because of not putting strong data security policies in place, according to a new report from Silver Tail Systems carried out by the Ponemon Institute.

It found that 90 per cent of firms lost revenue in 2012 because of reputational or financial problems caused by cyber attacks.

Writing in SC Magazine, Jason Steer, the solution architect for Europe, the Middle East and Asia with Silver Tail Systems, warned that businesses need to reconsider how they deal with online threats.

"As a first step, companies need to assign responsibility for website security to an individual or team within the organisation," he suggested.

Mr Steer added that establishing a link between website designers and IT security teams can ensure all aspects of a firm are kept safe.

GFI Software recently claimed that British companies need to step up their security procedures over Christmas as many staff members are likely to be absent.
