Companies advised to take on interim managers

26 May 2009

Businesses have been encouraged to consider the advantages of appointing an interim management team.

According to the Interim Management Association (IMA), many companies do not have the resources required to achieve desired goals.

Therefore, they could benefit from appointing an experienced transition team to oversee internal changes and deliver key objectives.

James Hunt, executive committee member of the IMA, commented: "If they are not able to employ someone full time, they can bring in an experienced manager on a flexible contract who has been there and done it."

Speaking to the Insider, he added that an interim manager can identify problems and deliver solutions at a fraction of the cost of a consultant.

However, Richard Beesley of recruitment agency Odgers Interim noted that clients who interview candidates themselves ensure they look beyond their skills and experience and make sure "the chemistry is right".

The comments come shortly after the IMA noted increased demand for interim management teams in the local and central government sectors over the last year.
