Communication 'vital to combating low morale during winter months'

19 January 2012

Managers have been reminded of the critical role played by clear communications in helping to bolster morale during the winter months.

Carol Spiers, a leading business stress consultant and chief executive of the Carol Spiers Group, said the dark and downcast weather conditions of winter typically have a tangible impact on workplace motivation, which can affect productivity.

In the present economic climate, this trend is exacerbated by uncertainty over job security, which makes it vital that managers are clear and open with workers over what condition the business is in.

Ms Spiers stated that communicating properly will play a vital role in inspiring employees and making sure everyone is working together as part of a team.

"Everybody is of value, everybody is recognised and don't forget those two little words - 'thank you'. They go a long way," she added.

Last month, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said employee engagement is playing a more important role in business than ever, due to the pressures on the global economy.
