CMI: Better management vital to improving educational standards

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has underlined the essential role better management will play in the improvement of UK educational standards.

Responding to a recent report from regulatory body Ofsted, the organisation has welcomed the focus contained in the 'Moving English forward' document on improving organisational leadership.

Petra Wilton, the CMI's director of policy and research, said setting a clear vision for improvement and proper strategic goals from a senior management level is vital to driving up standards of attainment in English.

She cited data from the institute showing that best practice management development can create improvements of up to 23 per cent in organisational performance measures.

Ms Wilton added: "CMI is increasingly working with schools to help develop skills of their senior management teams. This report is a timely reminder of the vital role of management and leadership in improving educational standards."

Last month, a report from the CMI showed that 43 per cent of UK businesses would currently describe their standard of line management as "ineffective".
