CBI welcomes procurement reform measures

28 November 2012

The government's attempts to reform UK procurement are a step in the right direction and will make it easier for businesses to bid for contracts, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Increasing transparency around this sector will ensure that more value can be delivered and increase efficiency in the sector, the organisation claimed.

CBI director for competitive markets Matthew Fell added that more needs to be done, with pipelines only published for a small fraction of the £230 billion procurement sector.

"It needs to accelerate and broaden this programme to link with its industrial strategy and support future growth," he argued.

Furthermore, the public sector will struggle unless it utilises the commercial skills of its private counterparts, concluded Mr Fell.

A report from Ernst & Young recently criticised procurement procedures within the NHS, suggesting savings of around £500 million could be made every year if the organisation became more efficient.
