Age-diverse workplaces 'require careful management'

27 September 2011

Companies with workers from a wide range of age groups may require more careful management than others, according to an expert.

Dr Jochen Menges of Cambridge Judge Business School has highlighted new research showing that the age structure within many companies is changing, due to the trend towards an older population across the UK.

This may be leading to friction among workers in some cases, due to the fact that older and younger people are sometimes unable to relate to how others express their emotions.

Dr Menges noted that this can have a serious impact on businesses in terms of financial success, growth, productivity and a variety of other vital performance metrics, meaning this is an issue that should be addressed as a priority.

"If people within these age-diverse companies just let their emotions go rampant, then that creates these negative effects," he said.

In July, Jayne Carrington of consultancy firm Right Management noted that proper engagement with staff is a particularly vital issue for firms undergoing a major change.
