Interim management roles – transformational change
The skills and personal attributes required to manage complex programmes of organisational change are a rare commodity in commercial companies or public sector organisations. Introducing an experienced interim manager to oversee change can help to facilitate transition over a short, defined timescale.
There are three major benefits in using interim managers to lead transition:
- The client can benefit from an experienced executive who has carried out a similar task in other areas. The interim manager will fully understand the overall objective. He or she will bring process and project management skills. Without holding any other portfolio, the interim manager can exclusively focus on the task and will be able to start the transition process almost immediately.
- The interim manager brings an objective view in what may be a politically charged and potentially emotional situation. An informed outside perspective can provide clarity of focus, unencumbered by personal agendas that will inevitably slow a typical internally led exercise. If the transition brief is being driven by external factors – a change in government policy, the merger of two organisations or new ownership in a parent company for example, the interim manager can immediately work to a new strategy, without the inertia you might normally encounter from executives who have been in post for some time.
- Interim management roles have the advantage of being acknowledged as a temporary appointment with a defined objective over a specified timeframe. This provides the impetus to drive the change agenda at the required pace. It does it from within, avoiding the negative connotations of the external consultant, delivering effective strategies and relinquishing the post as soon as the transition is achieved.
Odgers Interim has many interim managers in place driving transition agendas across commercial and public sector organisations, in the UK and internationally.
Richard Beesley, Partner and Deputy Managing Director of Odgers Interim Commercial Practice, says demand for UK interim professionals is robust. “The UK has a deserved reputation for experienced interims who can come in and make things happen. Odgers Interim works across all sectors, in the UK, Europe and further afield, and that’s attractive to global businesses.”
