Lord Deighton shares his thoughts on successful project management
Odgers Interim welcome Heathrow Chairman Lord Deighton to fifth annual PPM reception
Odgers Interim hosted the fifth PPM Reception at their Cannon Street office on Wednesday 9th November. Lord Paul Deighton was the evening’s keynote speaker, sharing his thoughts and insights on some of the key elements of successful project management.
Drawing on his wealth of experience at Goldman Sachs, a Treasury Minister, chair of the Treasury’s HS2 taskforce and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, he is currently the Chairman of Heathrow Airport.
His speech laid out the pathway to success when managing major projects, emphasising the importance of establishing responses to the two essential questions: ‘how’ and ‘why’. These questions, and their answers, are intrinsically linked and should be referred to at each juncture of the project management process. These dual answers form the cohesive foundation – even moral compass – of any project.
Lord Deighton also stressed the importance of people having a sense of pride in a project Using the Olympics as an example, he highlighted the necessity of a ‘greater good’ perception in the success of a project. And further, that stakeholders, beyond the confines of the organisation delivering the project, also have a belief in the idea and purpose behind the project.
Critically, attendees were reminded of the necessity of aligning the strategy and delivery closely throughout a large-scale project.
Unsurprisingly, the subsequent Q&As were dominated by questions surrounding the government’s recent approval of a third runway of Heathrow. Lord Deighton staked the case for the commercial importance of the project for the economic future of the UK.
With over 40 key decision makers from across the energy, manufacturing and industrial sectors gathered, guests also had the opportunity to network after hearing from Lord Deighton.
Odgers Interim’s sixth annual PPM reception is scheduled for next year.
Duncan Hoggett, Partner in the Odgers Interim Industrial practice, comments: “Lord Deighton brought decades’ worth of insight gained over his extensive career. All the events’ attendees were intrigued to pick his brains – with topics ranging across the political, transportation, financial, sporting and cultural spheres.
“Crucial to delivering a successful project, no matter the industry, is the ability to learn from previous experience and consistently fine-tune your management technique. The interim managers we place have an impressive array of projects behind them and are well-equipped to adapt their managerial technique in response to new and developing assignments. This is why increasingly interims are being entrusted to deliver large infrastructure projects – theyare a safe and reliable choice.”
