Annual Private Healthcare Breakfast 2016

25 October 2016

Berwick Partners, Odgers Berndtson and Odgers Interim hosted 2016’s Annual Private Healthcare Breakfast in London. The event proved a great draw for leaders in the independent healthcare community on a national basis to come together.  A significant number of Chairs, Chief Executives, Chief Operating Officers and Chief Financial Officers from a broad range of healthcare providers gathered for the occasion.

Our guest speaker was Lord Patrick Carter of Coles, a prominent UK figure, having served on the boards of US and UK healthcare, insurance and technology companies. He currently holds several Chair and non-executive positions including Chair of the Department of Health Procurement and Efficiency Board. Patrick has been reckoned to be the ninth most influential person in the English NHS.

Given his business acumen, experience and prominence, alongside the ongoing financial pressures in the NHS, it is perhaps not surprising that Lord Carter was asked by the Department of Health to produce an independent report on operational productivity in English NHS acute hospitals.  It was published earlier this year.  His findings identify far-reaching opportunities for improving productivity and efficiency across the NHS which could release around £5bn in savings over the next three to four years.

Lord Carter is an experienced and successful businessman as well as an avid supporter of the NHS.  He believes we have some of the best hospitals in the world, in terms of both quality and efficiency, all of which are exceptional; however, it became apparent during his research that most trusts need help and support to understand what good looks like if the £5bn efficiency savings are to be realised over the next three to four years.

The insights and perspectives from Lord Carter prompted a lively and interesting question and answer session and provided an excellent opportunity for our guests to delve deeper into the topic.
