UK public sector procurement 'most expensive in EU'

16 July 2013

Public sector procurement is more expensive in the UK than in any other EU nation, a new study has revealed.

A report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research, which was commissioned by e-procurement provider Gatewit, found the typical cost of the British purchasing process is £45,200. This is nearly twice as expensive as the European average of £23,900.

UK public procurement also tends to be more drawn out and is typically 53 days longer than the EU average and 20 days ahead of Italy, which is the second highest.

According to the study, competitive purchasing is also costly in Britain, with public bodies normally paying £1,260 for each bid they attract from potential suppliers. This is only more expensive in Denmark, Norway and Italy.

The report concluded that the high cost of procurement undermines the value the public sector is able to offer and this is something managers in the sphere may need to address.
