UK employees 'feel threatened by bosses'

23 April 2013

Poor leadership skills are causing many British employees to feel threatened by the behaviour of their bosses, a new report has claimed.

Leadership development consultancy Head Heart + Brain published a survey in which 47 per cent of workers said they have felt actively threatened by the leaders in their organisations.

The problem was found to be particularly apparent in the public sector, with 72 per cent of civil servants claiming the behaviour of their boss has caused them to feel threatened.

Jan Hills, partner at Head Heart + Brain, suggested recent upheaval within public sector organisations has left leaders feeling under immense pressure and their relationships with employees have suffered as a result.

"Pressure breeds threatening behaviour if it isn't channelled in the right way," she commented.

"If it is managed in the wrong way, stress can gradually erode the quality of their leadership until it deteriorates to a disastrously low level."

Ms Hills claimed this lack of effective leadership is having a serious impact on productivity levels in the UK economy.
