Transparency 'essential for workforce engagement'

Managers have been called upon to improve the transparency of their overall business aims if they wish to fully engage their workers.

Ashley Ward, director at people development company European Leaders, has suggested that many companies have failed to "see the light" on the benefits this can deliver for employee engagement.

According to the expert, workers are more likely to feel they are part of a cause if the company's overall goals - such as creating shareholder value or contributing to a local area - are explained to them.

Mr Ward cautioned against overlong mission statements that "go on forever", suggesting that straightforward aims are enough to engage many workers.

"If that cause is simply that you're just providing employment in a happy environment, that's a good enough cause. That transparency is the part that is so lacking in business," he added.

This comes after a poll published by European Leaders last week revealed that the ability to communicate passion and enthusiasm about a business is considered by employees to be an important quality of management.
