Taking lead on change 'can open doors'
Ambitious public sector executives should aim to take a leadership role in major change projects, according to one local authority chief executive.
Donna Hall, chief executive of Wigan Council, told a recent Guardian discussion panel that she believes this is "the best way" of getting to the top in local government.
"We chief executives love people with the energy and motivational skills to push tough projects forward, especially in the current climate," she explained.
Ms Hall was one of several experts who took part in the discussion, with council chief executives from around the country offering their tips on how to reach the top roles.
Ruth Hyde, chief executive of Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire, said periods of financial difficulty can bring opportunities for dynamic public sector leaders with ideas.
"Tough times provide motivation for change. These periods inspire teamwork and breed creativity, all of which are very positive forces," she explained.
