Supply chain managers urged to expect unexpected

25 September 2012

Executives working in the automotive industry have been encouraged to expect the unexpected when it comes to supply chain management.

Interchange Europe's new report has posited that looking ahead to any potential disasters or problems that could realistically occur can help businesses deal with these issues more rapidly and effectively.

Taking the example of the Thai floods as well as Hurricane Katrina in the US and the ash clouds that affected Iceland two years ago, the report explains that automotive supply chain managers must have strong contingency plans in place.

GM Thailand's Human Resources chief Samnuek Ngamtrakulchol said: "No one was prepared for the flooding and I think that the lesson we take away from this for the future is contingency plans have to be kept fresh."

A report from KPMG recently noted that fashion companies may need to embrace technology in order to cope with new challenges facing their supply chains.
