Study unveils growing use of shared services

An increasing number of companies are using shared services to improve organisational processes and boost their bottom line, new research has indicated.

The study from Deloitte, which polled 270 executives at global firms, noted an 11 per cent rise in the number of shared services centres per company since 2009.

"To fully leverage the value of shared services initiatives, companies need to align their approach with the broader business strategy," commented Susan Hogan, principal and service delivery transformation practice leader at the consulting firm.

She added that "change management elements such as communication, training and executive alignment" will be vital to the success of any shared services programme.

According to Deloitte's study, the proven success of shared services centres in the areas of finance, IT and procurement has seen their use expand into new functions such as real estate and legal.

Construction firm Balfour Beatty recently announced plans to create a £12 million shared services centre in the UK.
