Study highlights most crucial leadership skills

12 March 2013

The very best company leaders will be able to give their employees a clear sense of direction and will always keep customer interests at heart, a new study has found.

Conducted by the Marketing Society, the report looked at what makes a great executive and some of the UK's most successful directors were quizzed as part of the research process, the Telegraph reports.

Alan Giles - the outgoing chairman of Fat Face - told the news provider that it is easy for managers to lose sight of who they are aiming their products or services at.

"It's almost as if you need a parrot sitting on your shoulder repeating the mantra about let's not forget the customer," he was quoted as saying.

McDonald's UK boss Jill McDonald, easyJet chief Carolyn McCall and Neil Berkett of Virgin Media all took part in the survey and they insisted that strong managers will also be flexible, capable of taking risks without gambling on the company's future and have good communication skills.

A recent study by charity Roffey Park suggested that many UK managers lack basic skills, such as dealing with underperforming staff and handling tricky situations involving the workforce.
