Stronger leadership 'needed for better healthcare'

2 July 2013

A stronger level of leadership is required if the NHS is to improve healthcare, a pair of industry experts have claimed.

People and leadership specialist Steven Brooks and talent management and healthcare expert Anthony Surely - both of PA Consulting Group - believe higher standards are required across the organisation if services are to improve.

Writing in the Guardian, they claimed new leadership training is needed not just for senior managers but clinicians of all levels.

This is due to the changing nature of the NHS, which is being driven by technological developments and an aging population.

"Good leadership is necessary to deliver high quality 21st century healthcare," the industry experts commented.

They added that as patients would not expect to receive treatment from doctors who have not been properly trained in medicine, neither should they have to be cared for in a facility where senior figures have not been schooled in leadership.
