Steady growth for Scottish retail

13 June 2013

Scottish retail sales were "slow but steady" in May, according to new figures from the British Retail Consortium.

Volumes were up by 0.8 per cent compared to the same month last year, but were down by 0.5 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

However, when shop price deflation is taken into account, total May sales represented an increase of 0.9 per cent in real terms.

This news has been welcomed by Jonathan Flynn, retail consultant at Odgers Interim.

He commented: "Any growth in retail sales in the current climate is encouraging; however retailers are still cautious in their outlook."

Mr Flynn added that consumers remain very measured in their approach to spending and will expect their money to go further.

He said the public are making retailers work harder than ever for their sales and even well established brands cannot afford to be complacent.

The Odgers consultant believes promotional activity and customer experience will be crucial to secure sales in this volatile market.
