South-east councils to embrace shared service model

16 March 2012

Two councils in the south-east of England are set to unlock significant savings and efficiency benefits through the adoption of a new shared service model.

Oxfordshire County Council and Hampshire County Council have officially signed a new ICT partnership that will see the organisations combine their main human resources and financial services systems.

The arrangement was agreed in principle last December and will save £1 million for Oxfordshire County Council over the next three years, while generating shared capacity for the Hampshire authority.

By sharing skills and knowledge in this way, it is hoped the councils will be able to improve their resilience in future.

David Robertson, deputy leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: "Throughout the UK, councils are working ever more closely together to create efficiencies and save money. It is the common sense way forward."

This comes after LocalGov reported on a major new shared procurement arrangement involving nine local authorities in London earlier this month, which has been tipped to unlock £16 million in savings.
