Signs of recovery for UK retail

21 July 2013

The UK retail sector is showing signs of recovery, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to the organisation, the quantity of purchases increased by 2.2 per cent in June compared to the same month last year and by 0.2 per cent on May 2013.

Department stores enjoyed the most success, with sales volumes three per cent higher in June than the month before.

The ONS also revealed the average weekly spend for the retail sector increased from £6.8 billion in May to £6.9 billion last month, while the price of goods grew by 0.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2012.

British Retail Consortium director general Helen Dickinson welcomed the news. "This offers further evidence that tentative signs of a consumer-led recovery are beginning to take hold," she stated.

Ms Dickinson said the good weather experienced in the last few weeks will hopefully boost sales further.
