Recruitment policies 'crucial to welcoming diversity'

3 October 2012

Having the correct recruitment policies in place is crucial to increasing diversity in the workforce, not just in terms of hiring people of both sexes from across a variety of backgrounds but ensuring that the office is a welcoming and friendly place, an expert has suggested.

Employment expert John Rushton noted that it is important to have systems in place that allow employees to complain if they are unhappy with their relationships with their colleagues, but warned that having the correct set-up initially can save time and money.

"Much of it stems from the top downwards and at times unsuitable recruitment. Having people of good temperament is as important as their ability to do their job," explained Mr Rushton.

Anni Townend, leadership consultant, coach and author of Assertiveness and Diversity, recently pointed out that a diverse workforce can help boost productivity and creativity by creating a positive atmosphere among employees.
