Public services 'set for digital makeover'

1 February 2013

The government is open for business and wants to work with IT firms to begin digitalising the public sector, transforming the landscape of UK service provision, according to minister for the cabinet office Francis Maude.

He claimed that working with the private sector is central to the coalition's plans, expressing the hope that their expertise and experience will help ease the digital transition of public services.

The first wave of services to be redesigned includes driving test bookings, tax returns and state pension applications.

Mr Maude suggested that the way the British government does its business is changing.

"We want to see agile, innovative suppliers working with government on shorter, bespoke contracts to create the digital systems that support 21st century public services," he added.

This follows a report from the National Audit Office indicating that major efficiency measures have led to savings of roughly £316 million across the public sector's IT system.
